Description

For our senior project Connor and Daniel decided to pursue the field of movie critiquing and reviewing. The first step of our project was to receive some initial background and guidance into this field, which we received from former movie critic for the Washington Post, Desson Thomson. After meeting with him Connor and Daniel decided that we wanted to focus the movies that we watched into three different categories. First, we decided to watch major releases of movies that we would watch in theaters. Second, we decided to watch a group of documentaries. Third, we wanted to follow the work of well-known director Quentin Tarantino, so we watched a group of movies directed by him. Then we wrote reviews for these movies. Next we set up  website/ blog to open up access to our work.

Star Trek: Review 1

8.4/10

From the perspective of someone who had never seen more than two Star Trek episodes in his life, was by no means a star trek enthusiast, and only had very limited knowledge of the show’s and in many respects the movement’s history… I was blown away and can now truly be considered a Star Trek fan.

The movie jumps straight into the action and refuses to slow down. There is barely time to catch your breath as the extraordinary special effects and mesmerizing battle scenes fly across the screen. As was expected the special effects, both audio and visual, were out of this world. The ships were truly brought to life and even exceeded many expectations. The characters clashed and bonded in ways that left you only with a feeling of utter satisfaction. The partnership of James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto) was everything and more than we could have asked for. The sequence of events and the way in which thee ideas of time travel were woven seamlessly into the plot added beautifully to the growth of the characters.

The film is set in the early years of the USS Enterprise crewmembers as we meet James T. Kirk from infancy to captainship. The movie is centered on the battle between the federation and angry revenge seeking Romulan from the future. As the crew begins to uncover the Romulan leader’s plan to destroy Earth it is truly up to USS Enterprise to stop the planets destruction.

JJ Abrams can only be commended for his ability to mold beautifully the present world and the future world. This most intriguing aspect of the movie offers a great deal of insight into the true feelings of our beloved Spock, whose internal contradictions stemming from his half human and half Vulcan self are explained with great detail. Spock’s struggle between his entirely logical Vulcan self and his emotionally charged human self is a major theme that shows up constantly throughout the movie.

Although the growth of the characters was the focal point of this movie, hopefully building towards future Star Trek movies from JJ Abrams, without a doubt the most impressive quality of the movie was its beautiful cinematography, graphics, and CGI. The movie was able to truly capture and enhance the essence of this truly remarkable story in a way that has truly never been seen before. This movie solidified itself as the first great summer movie of the year, and it will be hard to surpass it.
