Description

For our senior project Connor and Daniel decided to pursue the field of movie critiquing and reviewing. The first step of our project was to receive some initial background and guidance into this field, which we received from former movie critic for the Washington Post, Desson Thomson. After meeting with him Connor and Daniel decided that we wanted to focus the movies that we watched into three different categories. First, we decided to watch major releases of movies that we would watch in theaters. Second, we decided to watch a group of documentaries. Third, we wanted to follow the work of well-known director Quentin Tarantino, so we watched a group of movies directed by him. Then we wrote reviews for these movies. Next we set up  website/ blog to open up access to our work.

Kobe Doin' Work

6.4/10

Spike Lee's new "documentary", Kobe Doin' Work premiered last week on ESPN as a TV documentary.  I put the word documentary in quotes because it hardly lives up to the standard of documentary.  Although it its Webster's definition as a film or television programme presenting the facts about a particular subject,  Kobe Doin' Work barely resembles any other documentary you might have seen.

Kobe Doin' Work starts off with an introduction by the infamous director Spike Lee standing in the empty Staples Center arena where Kobe Bryant has achieved glory and electrified the crowd in L.A. time and time again.  Spike explains that the documentary will follow NBA superstar Kobe Bryant throughout one game against the San Antonio Spurs.

The documentary hardly has any plot what so ever.  Basically,  all the movie is, is a camera following around Kobe through out the game while he comments on everything that is going on around in the game.  As a sports junkie,  I found it very interesting to tap into the mind of an NBA superstar and what he does to be so great at his sport.  Although this was very interesting, by the second quarter of the game I was ready for something else.

The style of the documentary was very monotonous and boring.  After a while,  I got so bored, it was hard to stay awake.  I think much more would have been gained from the film if Spike Lee were to have added other scenes.  For example, the could have added scenes from Kobe at practice or sit down interview with him.

In short,  there was no change of pace to the movie at all.  There were exciting moments but it lacked diversity.  To add to that, Kobe had an average game for him.  It would have been more exciting if Spike Lee, a diehard Knicks fan, had gotten his 61 pointer against the Knicks two days beforehand.  So to all my basketball fans out there,  wait for Lebron James' documentary to come out this August instead of wasting your time watch Kobe Doin Work.
